Building and leading a DevOps practice
A practical case study on establishing a DevOps operating model, engineering standards, team ownership and reliable delivery for a growing platform.
The business problem
A growing technology platform needs more than a collection of tools. It needs clear ownership, repeatable delivery, consistent infrastructure standards and a practical relationship between product, engineering, security and operations.
What I led
I shaped the DevOps roadmap and operating model, led a six-person engineering team and aligned cloud-platform work with delivery, security, resilience and support priorities. The focus was to make ownership explicit and turn recurring operational work into standard engineering capability.
Technical approach
- AWS platform engineering across container and data services
- Terraform and Helm for repeatable infrastructure and deployment configuration
- GitHub Actions for controlled CI/CD workflows
- Datadog and CloudWatch for observable services and actionable operations
- Runbooks, incident learning and control evidence integrated into normal work
Outcome
The result was a clearer operating model, stronger control ownership and a more repeatable path from engineering change to reliable production service.
Lesson
DevOps transformation succeeds when team boundaries, decision rights and feedback loops improve alongside automation. Tools accelerate a good operating model; they do not replace one.
